Divide and Conquer.
More ugly scenes from the Middle East. The recent (re)take over of the Gaza Strip by Hamas is, according the the Times online, likely to spur Israel to launch a massive invasion and bombardment of Gaza, which would in all likelihood lead to thousands upon thousands of innocents being killed.
“ISRAEL’s new defence minister Ehud Barak is planning an attack on Gaza within weeks to crush the Hamas militants who have seized power there.
According to senior Israeli military sources, the plan calls for 20,000 troops to destroy much of Hamas’s military capability in days.
The raid would be triggered by Hamas rocket attacks against Israel or a resumption of suicide bombings.
Barak, who is expected to become defence minister tomorrow, has already demanded detailed plans to deploy two armoured divisions and an infantry division, accompanied by assault drones and F-16 jets, against Hamas.”
None of this would have come about, if Israel and the western world had made good on their claims to be supporters of democracy. Hamas won control of the Palestinian Authority in free and fair democratic elections in January 2006. But their democratic mandate was rebuffed by Israel and the West. Indeed, the people of Palestine were then punished massively for having elected the “wrong people” for the purposes, principally, of Israeli and American policy. Funds were cut off, Hamas MP’s kidnapped, and Gaza turned into a giant prison encircled by Israel’s obscene wall.
Hamas were denied their right to govern because they refused to “recognise Israel”. As Robert Fisk, among others has pointed out, no-one told Hamas which Israel it was to recognise. The one of 1948? The one after 1967? Or the one that is even now continuing to expand it’s borders at the expense of what little bits of barren land the Palestinians have left?
Israel and America have ever since the elections of 2006, consistently sought ways to undermine and frustrate the democratically elected Hamas government. They have been encouraging Abbas, of Fatah, to confront and sideline Hamas, in what amounts to a coup. There are reports that Fatah fighters are being armed and trained from the purse of the American tax-payer., for the purpose of overthrowing the elected government of Palestine. The age old imperialist policy of divide and conquer. In this light one can see that Hamas have done what they have in order to forestall a coup attempt by Fatah which is underwritten by Mossad and the CIA.

To finish, a gem of an interview with THE MAN – Noam Chomsky. A month or so old, but still searingly insightful and important.
