Slaughter In Gaza

I am finding it hard to find the words to describe the horror and anger I feel about the current Israeli killing spree in the Gaza Strip.  Everything about it enrages me.  As I write, over 400 Palestinians have been slaughtered in Israeli bombing raids, of which an estimated 100 are women and children, with a further substantial number being ordinary policemen and traffic cops.   In contrast the Israeli dead from Palestinian rocket attacks in recent weeks can be counted on one hand, with the total over the last eight years counting about 25.   This massive disparity in casualty figures is truly stunning, and reveals the brutal indifference of the Israeli occupation forces to Palestinian life.   In pictorial form, with full stops representing single deaths, last weeks ‘conflict’ would look a little something like this –

Hamas has killed    –  . . . . .

Israel has killed      –  . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

And quite disgracefully this reality is not being reflected by our mainstream media, who are generally reporting this as a conflict between two equals.  There has been a quite shameful absence of critical thinking, notably in the “impartial”  BBC, with Israeli propoganda often being relayed without question, or without balance.  This is the same BBC that challenged the Orwellian Newspeak of the Russians during the conflict with Georgia, and who routinely adopt a sceptical tone when reporting the words and deeds of other governments, such as Zimabawe, China, or Burma.   Unsurprisingly, this sceptical tone is  rediscovered when they deem to report something that “Hamas says”.

Another quite remarkable aspect of the BBC’s reporting of this atrocity is that they can hardly bring themselves to use the word ‘atrocity’!  A quick google search for “bbc gaza atrocity” brings up  two references to “atrocites” from Aunty Beeb about current events.  One is a reference from an eye-witness who  witnessed atrocities, and the other is an interview with UN special rapporteur Richard Falk who tells the BBC that  the Israeli’s are committing atrocities.  Yet the BBC do not relay this in their other reports.   This despite  ex-US  President Jimmy Carter , among others, calling the Israeli policy in Gaza “a crime and atrocity” as far back as April 2008.

Little is said of the blockade of the Gaza Strip for the last 2 years, or of the fact that Hamas won a democratic election, and is currently in control of what is, in effect, an open-air concentration camp.    And while it is often said that Israel “withdrew from Gaza” in 2005, it is rarely if ever reported that Israel remains in control of the air, and the land and coastal borders.  After Hamas’s election victory, former Israeli Prime Minister’s aide Dov Weisglass claimed Palestinians would be   put on a diet“.   Israel  only permits items into Gaza that they deem “essential,” and hundreds have died due to a shortage of medical supplies, and not being provided with permits to reach places with better medical provision.

Israel’s aerial bombardment has brought to a head the urgent humanitarian needs in Gaza.  As has been the case for months Gazans are short on blankets, cooking gas and candles, among other essential items.   And yet unbelievably, Israeli Foreign Minister  Tzipi Livni has the sheer inhumanity to claim that  there is no humanitarian crisis in the [Gaza] Strip, and therefore there is no need for a humanitarian truce.”

Seemingly to her, and those like her, Palestinians are not human.   In a different time and place, they would be untermensch presumably…

  1. Dear Sir,
The Hamas rules in a district where it manufactures and smuggles rockets, anti tanks and anti aircrafts weapons. For the last 6 years rockets are shot at the nearby cities constantly, also during each cease fire period. The range of these rockets increased slowly from 8 to 25 KM and than to 40 KM. It’s true that thank to inaccuracy of the rockets they usually cause no loss of israeli life BUT the brutality of the Hamas and its intension to kill as many citizens as they can was clear when they succeded to send suicided terorists killing 15-20 people on one bus at a time, sometimes twice in one week. This is not surprising as the several Hamas leaders like Nizar Ayan that was killed yesterday talked of solidarity with Al Kaida (or just recall the palestinian celebrations on 9/11). No country can tolerate rockets attacks to its area therefore Israel has the right to bomb rokets hangars. I never heard of a country warning citizens to move away from specific targets but Israel does this. Its the palestinian citizens decision not to do that.

BTW the Hamas regime in Gaza is not the democratically elected one which is the one whose leaders are located in Ramallah – their forces took over control while murdering many of the Fattah personal.

    • Hans, you say Hamas shows it’s brutality by “killing 15-20 people”, “sometimes twice in one week”. What the hell does that then say for an Israeli attack which has killed three times that number, EVERY DAY, for over a week? When has Hamas ever killed over 400 Israeli’s in a week? Also, this conflict has nothing to do with suicide bombs. There have been none by Hamas for some time. The issue, apparently, is rockets. Rockets which even you admit “usually cause no loss of life.” I note you utterly fail to take into consideration that Hamas is a movement of resistance against a military occupation. An occupied people has the right to resist.

You are also either ignorant of the facts, or just plain lying, when you state that Hamas is not the democratically elected leaders of the Palestinians. Hamas won a free and fair election, as described here in the Washington Post for example –
      “Washington Post Foreign Service
      Friday, January 27, 2006; Page A01

RAMALLAH, West Bank, Jan. 26 — The radical Islamic movement Hamas won a large majority in the new Palestinian parliament, according to official election results announced Thursday, trouncing the governing Fatah party in a contest that could dramatically reshape the Palestinians’ relations with Israel and the rest of the world.”

Come back if you can muster something more substantial than tired old propoganda and bullshit.

      Peace out.

  2. Interesting… I’m gonna take a look..

  3. Well let’s see this issue of Israel killing so many. Hmm do you think there would be as many casualties if Hamas wasn’t hiding behind the innocent residents? I don’t think so, but when cowardly terrorists use the citizens as human shields and those folks don’t decide to give Hamas up, then this is what you are going to get.

Thanks for stopping by my site.

    God Bless,
    TTT

    • “do you think there would be as many casualties if Hamas wasn’t hiding behind the innocent residents?”
Care to substantiate that comment? It is completely untrue, as you seem to be suggesting, that Hamas are using human shields. Take, for instance, the killing of Hamas official Nizar Rayan. In order to kill him, the Israeli military dropped a 2,000lb bomb on his house, killing him, 2 of his wives, 4 of his children, and 6 others. http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/middle-east/israeli-bomb-strike-kills-senior-hamas-leader-1221112.html
This is scandalous. One has to bear in mind that Gaza is one of the most densely populated areas in the world, with about 1.5 million civilians living cheek to cheek in an area 20 miles long and 8 miles wide at it’s widest. The presence of militants within a civilian population does not, under international law, deprive that population of their protected status, and hence any assault upon that population under the guise of targeting militants is, in fact, a war crime.

  4. I believe most pro Israeli comments are from the army of bloggers the Israelis have employed for the pr campaign to whitewash the war crimes they committed recently in Gaza. Hence it would be a good idea not to publish their views even in the interest of balance and impartiality. Israel and its supporters are and will never play by the rules of balance or impartiality. What is required to counter this army of bloggers and their PR campaign anyway we can. Otherwise we risk being complicit in this crime against humanity.
